Japanese Time : Hours and Minutes

Now, we will talk about time in Japanese. First, we are talking about hours and minutes. It is also very important. If we have appointment, we will use this. In Japanese, Hours are only 12, instead of 24. It use “Gozen” as “a.m” dan “Gogo” as “p.m”.

07 : 00 七時 しちじ Shichi Ji (*)
08 : 00 八時 はちじ Hachi Ji
09 : 00 九時 くじ Ku Ji (*)
10 : 00 十時 じゅうじ Juu Ji
11 : 00 十一時 じゅういちじ Juu Ichi Ji
12 : 00 十二時 じゅうにじ Juu Ni Ji
Ask hours? 何時 なんじ Nan Ji

Please notice there are (*) irregular hours :

  • 04 : 00 is not “Yon-Ji”, but we use “Yo-Ji”
  • 07 : 00 is not “Nana-Ji”, but we use “Shichi-Ji”
  • 09 : 00 is not “Kyuu-Ji”, but we use “Ku-Ji”

Please notice in minutes 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10. They are irregular. It is not “Fun“, but it is “Pun“.

  • Important words regarding time
    • “Gozen” ( 午前) is used to indicate “a.m”. For example :

      In the morning, 07:00 o’clock è Gozen Shichi Ji è午前 七時

    • “Gogo” (午後) is used to indicate “p.m”. For example :

      In the afternoon, 19:00 o’clock è Gogo Shichi Ji è午後 七時

    • Now = Ima (今)
    • Morning = Asa (朝)
    • Noon = Hiru (昼)
    • Night = Yoru / Ban(夜)/(晩)
